6 Ways to invest in our planet this Earth Day

This year’s Earth Day is themed “Invest in our Planet” which we are 100% onboard with since we’re all about making small changes for impacting the bigger picture. When these small changes become habit it’s amazing what can happen.

For example, remember when you would throw your coins (when we had cash) in the car cup holder and after a few months you’d have enough money to buy some lunch? Without even thinking about it you’ve saved enough change for lunch. The same applies to investing our planet. Here are 6 simple ways to invest back into our planet.

    Reduce Plastic Waste

You’ve heard the terrible impact plastic has on the planet but what the biggest challenge is trying to reduce your plastic waste since it’s literally everywhere!  Now, you don’t need to be an “zero waste warrior” and completely eliminate plastic in your life but there are little ways to reduce your plastic waste around the home. These include:

Reusable products: Aim to take your reusables with you everywhere you go to avoid buying plastic water or take-away coffee cups

Aim to buy loose products: Yes, we know it’s super easy to grab a pack of pre-cut vegetables but if you buy the loose products and cut them yourself not only reduces plastic but the produce is usually much fresher.

Bring your own bags: It’s a oldie but a goodie. Aim to bring your own bags as much as possible

Ditch the tea bags: Turns out that the humble tea bag is filled with plastic. To avoid them simply use loose leaf tea and as an added bonus it makes you a little bit “fancier” in front of your friends.

Use more containers: Instead of cling wrapping everything or using ziplock bags try and pop things in containers. For example, instead of wrapping up half a watermelon in cling wrap just cut the whole thing into pieces and pop it in a container.

These are only a few ways to reduce plastic. There are countless ways to reduce and recycle waste. Get creative and see what you come up with.

    Leave the car at home

Cars are essential in most people’s lives especially since we live in such a big, sparse country. However, with that being said it doesn’t mean that we have to drive everywhere. Leaving the car at home on occasion reduces traffic congestion, saves money, reduces wear and tear on the car but most importantly reduces CO2 emissions.

Examples include; instead of driving to the shop to buy some eggs you could jump on the bike or simply walk to the shops or catch public transport when possible.

    Make your money more sustainable

This is a big one that you can do to really help the planet. We won’t dive into the nitty gritty as when it comes to money since we’re not financial advisors however, we will outline things you can look into further.

Super – For those who are young Super isn’t really a “thing” as such. It’s money you don’t see for another 30 to 40 years. But where you put your Super money can impact the planet. For example, some Super Funds invest your money into mining giants or major polluters. There’s a lot of fine print around this area but thankfully there are super funds out there that can provide good options in terms of investing your hard-earn money.

Banks – Choosing the right bank isn’t always the one that has the lowest rates or the cheesiest ads. Choosing the right bank may be the bank that doesn’t invest or fund fossil fuels. It’s a question worth asking, what does your bank support? Does it provide millions of dollars to mining, coal or other environmentally unfriendly pracises?

Stock Market – Investing in the stock market is nothing new but what is new is the amount of environmentally friendly brands and companies you can invest in. Just a little bit of research uncovers so many great companies who you can support.

Cryptocurrency – This is a very new and exciting way to trade however, there is a darker side to it.  Without going into too many technical details but for the sake of this we’ll be talking about Bitcoin (only one of thousands of cryptocurrencies). I find Bitcoins you need computers to search through millions of complex equations. Hence why it’s called “Bitcoin Mining.” For a computer to solve these equations it takes a lot of power. Not only to solve the puzzle but also to cool the systems from overheating. Unfortunately these ‘Bitcoin Mines” are based in areas of cheap energy, usually coal powered energy. In short, it takes a lot of energy and plenty of CO2 into the atmosphere to mine Bitcoin. Very similar to the energy it takes to mine other commodities like gold. Thankfully there are cryptocurrencies aiming to use renewable sources. If you’re thinking of investing in crypo it’s well worth looking into if the currency uses renewable energy.

The key takeaway is to just have a look into where your money goes and who it supports. It’s your money and you’re the boss.

Shop smart, read labels and buy seasonally

When you walk through the supermarket aisle is easy to just grab what’s on the shelf but it’s good to invest some time and research into understanding where the food comes from, where it’s processed and where it’s packed. For example that piece of frozen fish you bought may have been caught in New Zealand, processed in Thailand and shipped back to Australia for sale. That’s a lot of travelling and CO2 being pumped into the atmosphere. This goes for many foods like vegetables, fruits and so on.

By doing a little digging and buy products that locally made, produced and packed dramatically reduces that product’s carbon footprint.

    Voting

We’re lucky enough to live in a democracy and voting is both a right and privilege. You may not be the most politically savvy person but you vote does make a difference. Our leaders are the ones who have the power to make change for the better. By voting for the candidate who you think may be the best investor for the future of the planet can make a difference.

In summary, there are many ways to invest back into our planet from a personal level to a federal level. This Earth day we’re encouraging everyone just to take a good look into their everyday life and see if there is a “greener” way to do it.

  • 10 outdoor activities to do this Easter long weekend

10 outdoor activities to do this Easter long weekend

There’s nothing better than having time off but one thing that’s not that great is finding things to do that won’t break the bank. One of the cheapest and healthiest ways to keep active is getting outside. Here are our 10 activities to get the most out of the easter break.

    Walking

Going for a walk doesn’t seem that exciting but with a little bit of research and exploration you can turn a walk into an adventure. We’re lucky enough to be surrounded by some amazing landscapes and the National Parks and Wildlife Service has made it easy to discover the best walks around the country.

    Take some photos

These days we’re surrounded by cameras which makes it really easy to head out and take some photos. Gone are the days when you head to your local chemist and deposit your roll of film wait 5 days to receive your photos only to discover that half of them have your finger covering the lens.

Our phones can take some amazing photos, why not head out and shoot some great photos. City landscapes, bushland, beaches, birds and so on, the list is endless. This is especially great for kids. You can create a checklist of items/animals to take photos of and make a game of it. The best thing about this is you can post your great shots on social media and make your friends jealous!

    Grow something

Growing your own food is a relaxing and rewarding way to gather food. Whether you’re out in the backyard or out on the balcony, there are heaps of options when it comes to growing vegetables and fruits. Lettuce, beans, peas and the like are easy to plant and look after and flourish under the cooler autumn weather.

    Play outside

How long has it been since you’ve grabbed a frisbee or ball and headed down to the local park? Not only is it a great way to get some exercise but it’s also a great excuse to meet up with friends. Grab your friends, throw a frisbee around and have some laughs. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon!

    Have a picnic

Picnics are a classic outdoor activity but sometimes the obvious gets overlooked. Grab a basket or cooler and fill it with some tasty cheese, crackers and drinks and head off to your local park or beach! Easy.

    Catch a fish

Fishing is a great way to enjoy the day. Some of you will have an old fishing rod gathering some dust in the garage so why not dust it off and give it a crack? We’re surrounded by beautiful waterways and by dangling a line can really immerse you into nature and if you’re lucky enough you may even take home some dinner. Your local fishing shop will be more than happy to point you in the right direction to find a good fishing spot.

    Tie Dyeing

Tie dyeing is the trend that’s never gone out of fashion. Not only is it cool to create your own designs but it’s also an awesome way to recycle old clothes. There are plenty of tutorials online and it’s super easy to do.

    Go bug hunting

Kids love to find bugs and when you take your time and really inspect a tree it’s amazing what you may find! To make it more exciting you can make a checklist of common bugs that you need to tick off when you find them. You could also grab a bug catching book to help identify and learn about the bugs you’ve found.

    Stargaze

Have you ever just stared at the stars? Yes, we know it does sound a little weird but stargazing it really interesting. It’s amazing what you can find when you stop and have a look plus you don’t need to drive off to some remote part of the country to do it. On a clear night grab a friend, a torch and some hot chocolate and sit in the backyard or walk to your local headland, nature reserve or beach and just take a seat and look up. To make it even better invest in a telescope but only if you’re really keen! Also, there are some great apps out there to help identify star constellations and if you look closely enough, you’ll see satellites, shooting stars and who knows you may even see a UFO.

    Have a clean-up day

This is something that we are passionate about and we know it doesn’t sound “glamourous” but it’s a really good way to hang out with friends, get some exercise and make a real difference to your local environment. Simply grab a pair of gardening gloves and a garbage bag and head to your local park, beach or waterway and just pick up rubbish. At the end of the day, you’ll feel a good sense of accomplishment and who knows your efforts cleaning up the local area may brush off onto others to get involved doing the same thing.

In summary being out outdoors very important for our mental and physical health and if you’re having a vacation or staycation this Easter break there’s always something to do outside.

  • Easy tips for an eco-friendly Easter.

Easy tips for an eco-friendly Easter.

With Easter right around the corner, it can be easy to forget about all the waste, plastic packaging and foil wrap that come along with it.  So, we have put together a list of our favourite waste-free tips!

    Recycling Easter Egg Wrapping

Some may argue that easter eggs and easter egg hunts are the most crucial part of Easter. And whilst we agree, the foil packaging is a huge concern if not recycled properly. Easter egg foil should be scrunched up into a small fist-sized ball before placing it in the recycling bin. This makes sure the small pieces of foil do not get lost during the recycling process. If you haven’t consumed enough chocolate and you don’t want to eat any more, simply place the foil pieces into an aluminium can and recycle!

    Make your own Easter Baskets

Instead of purchasing prepackaged Easter Baskets filled with plastic toys, why not try and make your own! Our favourite pieces for an easter basket include home-made treats, wooden toys, handmade toys from fabric, an experience gift or seeds for them to make their own little garden (great for kids! Although make sure they don’t confuse them for lollies).

Use shredded paper instead of plastic grass

The plastic grass you see which fills easter baskets is something to avoid at all costs! Plastic grass is horrible for the environment, not only is it renowned for clogging water ways it is likely to get consumed by pets and wildlife (they mistake it for grass!). Plastic grass is not recyclable and will most likely end up scattered through the garden or in our oceans. Instead, we recommend using shredded paper!

    Recycle household items for Decorations

Creating Easter decorations or making an Easter hat for the annual Easter Hat Parade is a ritual for some. Sure, you could buy a whole bunch of plastic-filled variety store decorations or you can get creative and make your own decorations. Coloured paper, toilet rolls, egg cartons, dry pasta and the like can make some cute, eco friendly decorations.

    Be smart with seafood

Easter lunch is, in our humble opinion, one of the BEST things about Easter. Many of us do follow the tradition of eating seafood on Good Friday and over the Easter long weekend. By being smart with your seafood choices has a big impact on the planet. There are plenty of organisations out there to help you make the best choices with seafood. The good fish is a great, simply guide that’s been created by the Marine Conservation Society. https://goodfish.org.au/

With that said, we know it’s Easter and it’s a time to celebrate and it’s not a test to see how much or how little waste you create. It’s about making a little change that may have a big impact on you, your family and your planet.

  • Tips on celebrating sustainably

    Tips on celebrating sustainably

    Unwrap the wrapping

One of the biggest wastages during Christmas are the tonnes of gift wrapping which is simply thrown away and most of it ends up in landfill. Instead, place presents in a nice, reusable box or eco bag and if you do need to wrap your presents aim to use non-glossy paper that can be easily recycled.

    Eat Less Meat

Yes, this is a tough one. Everyone waits all year to eat Christmas ham however, cutting down on meat is good for you and the planet. For us in Australia we’re usually sweltering in the heat which presents a good opportunity to introduce salads and lighter meals to the Christmas lunch.

Pick your Shrimp to go on the BBQ

Prawns are another crowd favourite at Christmas but most wild prawns are caught using a relatively destructive method of fishing. Australian farmed prawns are better, sustainable option. A little tip, be sure to double check that the prawns originate from Australia. It’s always good to know where your produce comes from.

If you are going to be serving seafood for Christmas try and buy produce that features the MSC certification. To make life easier The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) has created a guide to help make a more sustainable choice.

Switch to LED or Solar Christmas Lights

Making the switch to energy saving lights will not only be good for the planet but also for your hip pocket.

    Be Gift Conscious

It’s super easy to grab some cheap stocking fillers for the family, especially the extended family you only see once a year. Try and reduce the waste and plastic and move towards homemade gifts like baked goods or you can give the gift of an experience like a nice dinner or trip to the zoo.

  • How to clean mould from water bottles

How to clean mould from water bottles

    What is mould?

Mould is the collective word for tiny little microorganisms that love to live, grow and breed in dark, moist areas. Some mould is bad and some mould is delicious, blue cheese anyone? However, the black mould that commonly appears in reusable water bottles is not delicious nor is it healthy.

How does the mould get there?

Moulds spread by releasing spores into the air and float around until they find a suitable place to grow. Unless you live in a sterile bubble it’s almost impossible to avoid mould spores. The good news is that’s it’s easy to prevent them to start a new life in and around your reusable water bottle.

What can mould do to your health?

Many types of mould are toxic to us and if we ingest high volumes of mould, it can make us sick. Most cases it doesn’t cause any harm but it can create an odour or can alter the taste if your drink which is not pleasant at all!

How do you prevent mould growing?

As we’ve mentioned, mould loves damp, dark areas and your water bottle is one of those places. So, to stop the mould from making a home there you need to ensure that it’s not dark and it’s not damp all the time. It’s a little bit of work but we recommend washing and drying your water bottle every day. This will clean out any mould spores and by removing any water it prevents any growth.

Are Cheeki bottles prone to mould?

Because we use only food grade products it’s safe for us and also safe for mould to build their home if it’s not looked after. Our signature blue inner silicone shield can be subject to mould but the good news is, because it’s blue it’s easy to see the mould growing so you can attend to it rather than having mould hide in a dark coloured lid.

How do I clean the mould?

There are some different ways to rid your bottle of mould. Vinegar, bi-carb soda and lemon juice are good natural cleaning solutions to remove the mould. Or you can use a CHANGE water bottle cleaning tablet that fizzes the mould away. These are also good for keeping your bottle clean.

What happens if I can’t get rid of the mould?

Sometimes mould leaves stubborn stains which can be very annoying. Lucky, you don’t need to replace the bottle, Cheeki supplies replacement lids and parts which are much more cost effective and waste-wise. We also supply silicone shields which can be easily replaced for only a few dollars!

So, in summary mould is everywhere and the best way to avoid mould growth is to ensure you clean and dry your bottle after a day of use. For more information on cleaning Cheeki products be sure to see our cleaning guide.
